A growing number of US law schools accept the GRE alongside the LSAT — but not all of them do, and the two tests measure very different things.

Which one fits you?

The honest answer

GRE Choose GRE if…

  • You have not fully committed to law — the GRE also works for master’s and PhD programmes elsewhere.
  • You are strong at maths — the GRE has a Quantitative section; the LSAT does not.
  • You already have a GRE score from another application.
  • ⚠️ Essential: check each school on your list actually accepts the GRE.

LSAT Choose LSAT if…

  • You are committed to law — the LSAT remains the clearest signal to a law admissions committee.
  • You are strong at logical reasoning — exactly what the LSAT measures and law schools value.
  • Your target school accepts only the LSAT (many still do).
  • You want a score directly comparable with most other applicants.
If law is the only destination, the LSAT remains the safe choice: every school takes it and it measures the skills they want. The GRE makes sense if you want to keep other fields open — but verify each school’s policy before betting on it.

Frequently asked

GRE vs LSAT

Do law schools treat the GRE the same as the LSAT?
Schools that accept the GRE generally say they weigh it equally. But not every school accepts it, and LSAT data for admitted classes is usually published more transparently. Check each school’s admissions page.
Is the LSAT harder than the GRE?
Different rather than harder. The LSAT is entirely logical reasoning and dense reading, with no maths. The GRE spreads across Verbal, Quant and writing. Logic-minded candidates prefer the LSAT; maths-strong candidates often find the GRE kinder.
How long are scores valid?
GRE scores are valid for 5 years. LSAT scores fall within a similar 5-year reporting window under LSAC policy — but confirm directly with LSAC and your schools, as policies change.
