SAT vs ACT

SAT or ACT: which test suits you?

Every US university accepts both and prefers neither — so the real question is which one you score higher on. The differences come down to pace and the ACT’s Science reasoning section.

Which one fits you?

The honest answer

SAT Choose SAT if…

  • You want more time per question — the SAT is noticeably less rushed than the ACT.
  • You are strong at close reading and reasoning from evidence and dislike being hurried.
  • You want a digital, adaptive test (the Digital SAT runs about 2 hours 14 minutes).
  • You would rather avoid a Science reasoning section — the SAT has none.

ACT Choose ACT if…

  • You work quickly and decisively — the ACT rewards pace.
  • You read charts and data tables well, which turns Science reasoning into an advantage.
  • You are comfortable with a slightly wider maths range (the ACT includes basic trigonometry).
  • You prefer a linear, predictable format over an adaptive one.
Neither is “easier”: the SAT gives you time, the ACT demands pace but is more predictable. The only reliable way to choose is to sit one timed paper of each and compare percentiles — intuition is almost always wrong here.

Frequently asked

SAT vs ACT

Do US universities prefer the SAT over the ACT?
No. Universities state explicitly that they accept both equally. What matters is your percentile, not which test it came from. Pick the one you score higher on.
Can I take both and submit the higher score?
Yes, and many candidates do. But preparing for both at once usually leaves you mediocre at each — better to diagnose both, then commit to one.
How do SAT scores convert to ACT?
College Board and ACT publish an official concordance table for reference. It is an approximation — use it to compare your own diagnostics, not to replace a university’s stated requirement.
