Cổ phiếu và thị trường: 25 thuật ngữ
Trong tiếng Anh, stock và share thường dùng thay cho nhau. Khác biệt nhỏ: shares hay đi với số đếm và một công ty cụ thể (100 shares of Vinamilk), còn stocks hay dùng khi nói chung về cổ phiếu (I invest in stocks).

Shares of Company X rose 6% on Tuesday after the firm reported quarterly earnings per share of 1.20 dollars, beating the consensus estimate of 1.05 dollars. Revenue grew 9% year on year. Management also raised its full-year guidance, citing strong demand in Asia. The broader index closed 0.4% higher. Meanwhile, government bond yields fell 10 basis points as investors bet that the central bank would cut interest rates next month.
Những cụm đáng chú ý:
- shares rose 6%: giá cổ phiếu tăng 6%. Tin tài chính gần như luôn dùng rose/fell, gained/lost, climbed/slipped.
- beating the consensus estimate: vượt dự báo trung bình của giới phân tích. Ngược lại là missed estimates.
- year on year: so với cùng kỳ năm trước. Bản tin Mỹ hay viết year over year, viết tắt YoY.
- raised its full-year guidance: nâng dự báo kết quả cả năm do chính công ty công bố.
- yields fell 10 basis points: lợi suất giảm 0,1 điểm phần trăm, đồng nghĩa giá trái phiếu tăng.
- investors bet that…: nhà đầu tư đặt cược rằng, tức là kỳ vọng điều gì đó sẽ xảy ra.
Dịch nghĩa: Cổ phiếu Công ty X tăng 6% hôm thứ Ba sau khi công ty công bố lợi nhuận trên mỗi cổ phiếu quý đạt 1,20 USD, vượt dự báo trung bình 1,05 USD. Doanh thu tăng 9% so với cùng kỳ. Ban lãnh đạo cũng nâng dự báo cả năm nhờ nhu cầu mạnh ở châu Á. Chỉ số chung đóng cửa tăng 0,4%. Trong khi đó, lợi suất trái phiếu chính phủ giảm 10 điểm cơ bản do nhà đầu tư kỳ vọng ngân hàng trung ương sẽ giảm lãi suất vào tháng tới.
Lỗi người Việt hay mắc
- Dùng "interest" cho mọi loại lãi. Tiền lãi trái phiếu là interest hoặc coupon; lãi khi bán cổ phiếu cao hơn giá mua là capital gain; mức sinh lời nói chung là return.
- Nhầm "yield" với "return". Yield là thu nhập định kỳ so với giá (lãi, cổ tức); total return gồm cả phần thay đổi giá.
- Dịch word-by-word "cổ phiếu tăng trần". Tiếng Anh nói the stock hit its ceiling price hoặc the stock rose by the daily limit.
- Đọc sai "portfolio" và "arbitrage". portfolio nhấn âm thứ hai (port-FO-lio); arbitrage nhấn âm đầu và kết thúc bằng âm /ʒ/ giống chữ "s" trong measure.
