IIBA business analysis certifications: ECBA, CCBA, CBAP and four specialty credentials

The three core IIBA certifications and four specialty credentials: eligibility, experience hours, PD hours, exam structure and cost — checked against IIBA source documents.

Business analysis sits between a business problem and its solution: getting to the real problem, drawing requirements out of stakeholders, describing them precisely enough for a delivery team to build the right thing, then checking whether the result actually created value.

IIBA (the International Institute of Business Analysis) is the global professional association for this work, and its certifications are the measure most employers recognise. This page explains the three core levels, the four specialty credentials, eligibility, exam structure and cost — with sources so you can verify every figure yourself.

Audience

Who business analysis certification is for

These credentials are not only for people whose job title says "Business Analyst". In practice most business analysis work is done by people carrying a different title.

The people who usually pursue them:

  • Working BAs, system analysts and product owners in software, banking, insurance and e-commerce who want a measure of their craft that travels beyond their current employer.
  • Project managers and tech leads who want one consistent way of handling requirements instead of a new approach every project.
  • Career changers from testing, operations, customer support or finance — people who already understand the business and need the method and a credential that gets their CV read.
  • Final-year students and early-career professionals: ECBA is the only level that asks for no prior hours.

Four specialty credentials

These follow a subject area rather than seniority. IIBA states plainly that two years of work in the relevant area is **recommended but not required**.

IIBA®-AAC — Agile Analysis

For analysis work inside agile teams, across the strategy, initiative and delivery horizons.

IIBA®-CBDA — Business Data Analytics

For people who use data to drive business decisions: framing the question, choosing the data, interpreting and communicating the result.

IIBA®-CCA — Cybersecurity Analysis

An IIBA credential offered with the IEEE Computer Society, for analysis work on security initiatives.

IIBA®-CPOA — Product Ownership Analysis

For product owners and product people: product strategy, backlog stewardship and decisions about value.

Figures checked on iiba.org on 1 September 2026, in US dollars, before tax and international transfer charges. Application fees are non-refundable and applications expire after 12 months. For ECBA you have six months from the day IIBA receives payment to schedule and sit the exam. Clever Academy neither collects nor influences any of these amounts — you pay IIBA directly.

Key terms

PD hours and CDUs: understand these before you pay for a course

This is where newcomers are most often confused, and where they are most often mis-sold.

**Professional Development (PD) hours** are verified learning hours you must accumulate BEFORE you may apply for CCBA (21 hours) or CBAP (35 hours). **CDUs (Continuing Development Units)** are what you accumulate AFTER certification to keep it valid — CBAP, for example, is recertified every three years.

Not every hour of study counts. Under IIBA’s handbook for training partners (September 2025), a course qualifies for PD hours only once IIBA has endorsed it: at least one hour long, at least 75% aligned to IIBA standards, led by an instructor rather than delivered as a one-way presentation, with measurable learning objectives and assessment during the course. One hour of classroom time equals one PD hour, up to 40 hours.

In other words: a course that calls itself "CBAP exam prep" does not necessarily give you valid PD hours. That depends on whether the course appears in IIBA’s approved directory — not on how it is advertised.

Straight advice

How to choose a training provider

IIBA’s training partner handbook is explicit: to offer an IIBA exam preparation course, a provider must be an active Training Partner **and** the course itself must be endorsed by IIBA. IIBA also requires the instructor of an exam prep course to hold that certification or a higher one.

So before paying for any "CBAP/CCBA/ECBA preparation" course, anywhere in the world, ask for three things: the provider listed in IIBA’s Training Partner directory, the course listed in the endorsed training directory, and the certification held by the person actually teaching. All three are publicly searchable on iiba.org.

**About Clever Academy:** we are looking into IIBA’s Training Partner programme and have not joined it. As you read this page, Clever Academy does **not** offer IIBA certification preparation courses, has no IIBA-endorsed training, and study hours with us do **not** count as PD hours or CDUs. This page is reference material about the profession and the credentials — it is not a course sales page.

If you would like to hear from us when Clever Academy opens a business analysis programme, leave your details. We will only be in touch when there is a real programme, and this page will be updated the moment that status changes.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

1I have never worked as a BA. Where do I start?

With ECBA. It is the only level that asks for no work experience and no prior professional development hours: you buy the exam, prepare with IIBA’s materials and sit it. The exam is 75 minutes and 50 multiple-choice questions, taken online with remote proctoring.

2Is IIBA certification required to work as a BA?

No. It is a voluntary professional credential, not a licence to practise. Its value is that employers have a common measure for reading your CV, and that preparing for it gives you a method rather than a set of habits.

3Which languages are the exams available in?

The new ECBA exam and its learning journey are provided in English, and IIBA maintains a separate page for translated exams and resources. Check the current language availability on iiba.org before you register.

4Do I have to be an IIBA member to sit an exam?

No, but non-members pay more. For CBAP the exam fee is $350 for members and $450 for non-members (checked 1 September 2026) — a gap that is close to the cost of membership itself, which is why most candidates join first.

5Do the certifications expire?

They must be maintained through recertification by accumulating CDUs — every three years for CBAP. The details are in each credential’s Recertification Handbook on iiba.org.

6Does Clever Academy teach CBAP preparation?

Not at present. Clever Academy is not an IIBA Training Partner, so we offer no IIBA certification preparation courses and hold no IIBA-endorsed training. We state this plainly rather than leaving you to infer it.
