GMAT vs GRE

GMAT or GRE: which test for your graduate application?

Most business schools now accept both, so the question is no longer “what does the school require?” but “which test lets you score highest?”. This comparison follows the actual formats of the GMAT Focus Edition and the GRE General test.

Which one fits you?

The honest answer

GMAT Choose GMAT if…

  • You are targeting an MBA or business master’s and want the clearest signal to a business admissions committee.
  • You are strong at data reasoning and quantitative logic — GMAT Focus’s Data Insights section plays to that.
  • You want a short, focused test: GMAT Focus has dropped the essay (AWA) entirely.
  • You like being able to review and change answers within each section, which GMAT Focus allows.

GRE Choose GRE if…

  • You have not settled on a field — the GRE works for master’s and PhD programmes across disciplines, not just business.
  • You are strong in academic vocabulary and the GRE-style Verbal suits you better.
  • You want the shorter sitting (the shortened GRE General runs under two hours).
  • You are chasing funding in programmes outside business schools (engineering, social sciences, policy…).
If you are committed to an MBA and strong quantitatively, the GMAT is still the most “on-channel” signal. If you want to keep several fields open, the GRE is more flexible. The most reliable way to decide: take a diagnostic of each and compare your percentiles rather than guessing.

Frequently asked

GMAT vs GRE

Do business schools prefer the GMAT over the GRE?
Most schools state explicitly that they accept both and prefer neither. What actually matters is your percentile: a strong GRE beats a mediocre GMAT. Check each programme’s admissions page, as exceptions still exist.
Can GMAT and GRE scores be converted?
ETS and some schools publish conversion tools, but they are approximations only — the tests measure different skills on different scales (GMAT Focus 205–805, GRE 260–340). Do not let a conversion chart replace an actual diagnostic test.
How long are scores valid?
Both GMAT and GRE scores are valid for 5 years. If you plan to apply within the next few years, sitting the test while you are still in study mode is a sensible strategy.
How do I find out which test suits me?
The fastest route is to take the GMAT diagnostic and the GRE diagnostic and compare; or book a free consultation so an advisor can read the results with you and map a plan.
