IELTS Choose IELTS if…
- Your target institution accepts IELTS (standard across the UK, Australia, Canada, Europe and most US universities today).
- You are more comfortable speaking to a real person — Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner.
- You want the option of a paper-based test, or simply read better on paper than on screen.
- You need the certificate for work or immigration (General Training), not only for study.
TOEFL Choose TOEFL if…
- You are targeting US universities — TOEFL was built for the American academic system and is accepted everywhere in the US.
- You type quickly and are comfortable working entirely on a computer; Speaking is recorded into a microphone, with no examiner in front of you.
- You are strong at academic reading and note-taking during long lectures — exactly what TOEFL tests.
- You find face-to-face speaking stressful and perform better talking to a machine.
Neither test is objectively “easier” — one simply fits your strengths better. The practical rule: check your institution’s requirement first (if it accepts only one, the decision is made), then choose based on how you handle Speaking and whether you read better on paper or on screen.

Is IELTS or TOEFL easier?
Neither is academically easier — both measure the same four skills at university level. The difference is format: IELTS Speaking is a live interview, TOEFL Speaking is recorded; IELTS offers a paper version, TOEFL iBT is computer-only. Candidates who are strong in face-to-face conversation often prefer IELTS; those comfortable working on a computer often prefer TOEFL.
How do IELTS scores convert to TOEFL?
The tests use different scales (IELTS Band 0–9, TOEFL 0–120) and each university publishes its own comparison. ETS provides a reference table, but the number that matters is the one on your target university’s admissions page — check that rather than trusting a generic conversion chart.
How long are the results valid?
Both IELTS and TOEFL results are valid for 2 years from the test date. If you are applying within the next year or two, work backwards so your certificate is still valid when the university reviews your file.
