CFA® Level III: Pathways, Essays, Item Sets and the Final Exam Structure
CFA® Level III is the final level on the journey toward earning the CFA Charter. This is where candidates must demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge, apply concepts in practice and make decisions in higher-level contexts such as portfolio management, asset allocation and investment advisory.
Unlike the previous two levels, Level III uses a mixed format of item sets and constructed response questions, while also allowing candidates to choose one of several specialized pathways that best matches their career direction.
Mixed Format Exam
Combines item sets and constructed responses, requiring clear analysis, concise answers and precise alignment with the question prompt.

One important feature of Level III is that candidates can choose 1 of 3 specialized pathways according to their interests and career goals.
Private Wealth Focuses on advisory, wealth management and investment solutions for high-complexity individual clients. Private Markets Suitable for candidates interested in private market investing and specialized investment structures. Portfolio Management Strongly oriented toward portfolio management, decision-making and asset allocation strategy. Preparation TimeHow long does it take to study for CFA® Level III?

CFA® Level III exam format
Level III has the most distinctive exam structure in the CFA journey. Candidates must handle both item sets and constructed response questions, and both formats are tied to passages that require careful contextual reading.
Exam structure
The exam includes 11 item sets and 11 essay sets, with each set worth 12 points.
Distribution across sessions
Each session includes either 6 item sets and 5 essay sets, or 5 item sets and 6 essay sets.
Scored question sets
There are 20 scored sets in total. In addition, there are 2 trial sets: 1 item set and 1 essay set that are not scored.
Exam duration
The full exam lasts 4 hours and 24 minutes, divided into 2 equal sessions, each lasting 2 hours and 12 minutes, with an optional break.
Characteristics of Level III questions
All questions must be answered based on information in the passage. Therefore, the questions are not standalone as in Level I. You need to read the context first, understand the exact requirement and then decide how to answer.
Topics in the curriculum may be randomly distributed into the first session, the second session, or both sessions. Each passage begins with information about the topic and total point value, usually 12 points.
Item set question format
Each item set in the CFA Level III exam includes a short passage followed by 4 multiple-choice questions. There are 44 multiple-choice questions in total, each worth 3 points.
Examples of Level III Item Set Questions (PDF) Constructed Response / EssayConstructed response format in CFA® Level III
This is the section that makes Level III most distinctive. Candidates must not only choose answers, but also write short responses that are focused, concise and aligned with the command words used in the prompt.
Command words are bolded
In the stem, command words such as Determine, Justify, Explain and Discuss are bolded to show what the response must do.
Responses are entered in text boxes
Each constructed response question has its own text box. Your answer should be clear, direct and aligned with the number of points requested.
Separate multiple points clearly
If the prompt asks for more than one point, each point should be separated clearly. Bullet points are acceptable if the logic is clear.
Only the required number of answers is graded
If the prompt asks for 2 points and you write 4, only the required number of responses will be graded in the order presented.
Calculation responses in the essay section
The constructed response box accepts both text and numbers. If you enter the correct final numeric value, you may receive full credit without necessarily showing the complete formula. However, if you describe the steps or show the calculation logic, you may receive partial credit if the final result is not fully correct.
In some cases, the exam may use a format similar to multiple choice within the constructed response section, and the number of answer choices may not always be limited to three.
Example 1
Example 2
Example 3
Discuss one weakness in the risk management process for each of the following:
i. Company A
ii. Company B
The candidate needs to enter 2 separate parts: one weakness for Company A and one weakness for Company B.
Key point: In Level III, writing more is not the same as writing better. Focus on answering the required number of points, directly and according to the command words. Exam TipsCFA® Level III exam tips
Level III requires both knowledge and a clear exam strategy. Candidates need to understand the content, know when to write briefly, know when to explain and manage time between item sets and constructed responses.
- No penalty for guessing: There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so make sure you answer every question.
- Know your calculator well: Familiarity with necessary functions and operations can save valuable time during the exam.
- Dress comfortably: Wearing layers can help you adapt to the test-room temperature and remain comfortable throughout the exam.
- Get familiar with testing hardware and software: Understanding the test-center experience in advance can help reduce pressure on exam day.
- Practice, practice, practice: Use mock exams and practice tools in the learning ecosystem to train in the correct exam format.
- If you need proctor assistance: If possible, continue working on other parts while waiting for assistance so you do not waste exam time.
Practical Skills Module (PSM) requirement
In addition to sitting for the exam, candidates need to complete one Practical Skills Module (PSM) at each level to receive their exam results.
You cannot complete the same module for multiple levels. For example, if you completed Python Programming Fundamentals at CFA Level I, then at later levels you need to complete another module such as Python, Data Science & AI, or Analytical Skills to meet the corresponding requirement.
This reflects CFA’s increasingly clear direction: the program is not only about testing investment thinking, but also about emphasizing practical skills in the context of modern finance.
