However, many students still have numerous questions about this exam. Clever Academy has compiled and answered the most common questions about GMAT so you can gain a comprehensive understanding and prepare best for your study abroad journey.
1. What is GMAT and why is it important?
GMAT is a standardized test designed to assess critical thinking, reasoning, analytical, and problem-solving skills – essential competencies for success in postgraduate business programs. Your GMAT score is one of the important factors that helps the admissions committee evaluate your academic potential, especially when comparing candidates from different educational backgrounds.
2. How is GMAT Focus Edition different from the previous version?
The new GMAT Focus Edition has been redesigned to focus more on core skills. The current test structure consists of three sections, each lasting 45 minutes:
- Quantitative Reasoning: Assesses your ability to analyze data and solve mathematical problems.
- Verbal Reasoning: Measures reading comprehension and verbal reasoning skills.
- Data Insights: Tests your ability to interpret and analyze data from various sources.
This version no longer includes the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) and Integrated Reasoning scored together with other sections, providing a more efficient and focused testing experience.
3. What GMAT score is considered "good"?
A "good" score depends on the requirements of each school and program you're applying to. However, generally, high GMAT scores typically fall in the 700+ range for top schools. According to GMAC statistics, the average score of test-takers admitted to the top 100 schools is usually above 650. It's best to research the average GMAT score of students admitted to your target school so you can set an appropriate goal.
4. How many times can you take the GMAT and how many days must you wait between attempts?
You can take the GMAT a maximum of 5 times within a 12-month period and there is no limit on the number of times you can take it throughout your lifetime. However, you must wait at least 16 days between each attempt. Thorough preparation and taking the test only when ready will help you save time and money.
5. How long is a GMAT score valid?
Your GMAT score is valid for 5 years from your test date. This gives you enough time to plan your studies, accumulate work experience, and submit applications at the most appropriate time.
6. Do you need to bring a calculator to the test?
