College Board releases scores for the 3 October 2026 SAT on 16 October. If you are applying Early Decision or Early Action, most colleges' deadline is 1 November. That sounds like two weeks, but Monday 19 October to Friday 30 October holds exactly ten business days, which is also the upper end of College Board's standard delivery time for score reports.
This guide is for students who have just received their October score and must settle three things within days: send it or apply test-optional, how to send it in time, and whether to retake. For choosing a retake date in general, see September 2026 SAT scores: retake in November or December?
Score in hand: send it or go test-optional
Start with each early-round college's testing policy. There are three groups:
- Test-required: you must send a score, so the only question is which test date.
- Test-optional: sending is your choice, and a strong score still helps.
- Test-blind: scores are not used in admission decisions. The University of California system is the best-known example.
For test-optional colleges, compare your score with the college's middle-50% range from its admissions page or Common Data Set. At or above the median, send it. Below the 25th percentile, you are usually better off not sending. In between, it depends on how strong the rest of your file is. If you decide not to submit, do not self-report the score on your application either.
How long official score reports take
This is where timelines usually go wrong. The figures below are from College Board:
- Four free score sends come with each weekend registration, but you must choose recipients before the test or within nine days after it. For the 3 October test that window closed on 12 October, before scores were released. If you chose recipients at registration, those reports go out automatically.
- Additional reports: USD 15 each. Standard delivery is typically 5–10 business days from the order.
- Rush reporting: a USD 31 rush fee on top of USD 15 per report. Reports go out within 1–4 business days. Rush is only for scores already released and cannot be changed or cancelled.
| Order placed | Delivery | Latest dispatch by College Board |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday 17 Oct | Standard (5–10 business days) | Friday 30 Oct, just before 1 Nov |
| Saturday 17 Oct | Rush (1–4 business days) | Thursday 22 Oct |
| Monday 26 Oct | Standard | Possibly after 1 Nov |
None of this includes the time a college needs to match scores to your file. If you use standard delivery, order on the weekend of 17–18 October. If you are into the second week and have not sent, rush is the safer option. Some colleges accept self-reported scores and only require official reports on enrolment, so check each admissions page before paying for rush.
Score Choice and superscoring for early applications
Score Choice lets you choose which test dates to send. You cannot combine the Math section from one date with Reading and Writing from another. Two points matter:
- Score Choice does not apply to the four free sends chosen at registration. Those send the score from that test.
- Some colleges require all scores. When you select colleges on the score-sending page, College Board shows each one's policy so you can send what it requires.
If a college superscores, it takes your best section scores across dates. With both a 12 September and a 3 October score, send both so the college can combine them. Our SAT superscore checker does the arithmetic.
Retaking: 7 November only works for Regular Decision
- 7 November SAT: registration deadline 23 October, late deadline 27 October (USD 38 late fee). Scores are released on 20 November, almost three weeks after 1 November.
- Deadlines are 11:59 p.m. US Eastern time. In Vietnam that is around 10:59 a.m. on 24 October for the regular deadline and 10:59 a.m. on 28 October for the late one.
- Some colleges accept October and November scores for early rounds. College Board itself advises confirming this with the college before ordering rush reports. Do not assume.
- If you apply ED to one college and Regular Decision elsewhere, 7 November still helps for RD, with 5 December (scores 18 December) as a backup.
Decision table by score
Compare your October score, or your superscore, with the middle-50% range of your early-round college:
| Your score | For the 1 Nov ED/EA application | Take the 7 Nov SAT? |
|---|---|---|
| At or above the 75th percentile | Send now, by standard delivery on 17–18 Oct | No. Put the time into essays |
| Median to 75th percentile | Send | Only if you have RD colleges with higher ranges |
| 25th percentile to median | Send if the rest of your file is strong; otherwise test-optional where allowed | Consider it, for RD |
| Below the 25th percentile | Test-optional where allowed. If the college requires scores, consider moving it to RD | Yes, with 5 Dec as a backup |
This table is Clever Academy's framework, not a rule. GPA, essays, activities and intended major all matter, so talk it through with your counsellor before deciding.
